THE passing of rising basketball star Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia has drawn tributes from the Philippines and abroad, including from US-based songwriter Dr. Rick Hendrix, whose Christian song When There is No Hope There is Grace was performed during Baterbonia’s funeral in Talacogon.
Baterbonia, 18, was laid to rest on June 24 after he and fellow Ateneo player Divine Adili died during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, on June 8. Their deaths sparked nationwide mourning and calls for accountability as investigations continue.
In the weeks following the tragedy, Baterbonia’s parents, Rene Sr. and Rovelyn, received a condominium unit through the National Housing Authority, in coordination with the Provincial Government of Agusan del Sur and local officials. The family had long lived in a flood-prone home, and relatives said Bobet had hoped to provide them with a safer place to live.
Hendrix said the inclusion of his song reflected the power of faith and music to bring comfort during grief.
Baterbonia’s legacy continues through the declaration of June 8 as Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia Day in Talacogon and Ateneo de Davao University’s plan to name one of its covered courts in his honor.
