The Senate impeachment court has elected Senator-Judge Francis Escudero as the presiding officer. Twelve voted in favor, eight were against. This happened on the first day of the trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. Senator-judge Alan Peter Cayetano objected to the election of Escudero as presiding officer. Citing the constitution, Cayetano said the presiding officer should be the Senate president — a position currently held by Senator-Judge Sherwin Gatchalian.
