At 51, Philippines-China relationship needs stability and amity

JUNE 9, 2026 marks the 51st anniversary of the establishment of formal diplomatic relations between the Philippines and China. Since 1975, the two nations shared interesting moments of cooperation and confrontation. The milestone is a reminder that stabilizing this fragile relationship is one of the Philippines’ most urgent foreign policy challenges.

The West Philippine Sea remains the most visible flashpoint of hostility. Chinese coast guard and militia vessels continue to challenge Philippine patrols and resupply missions, often resulting in dangerous encounters. These incidents inflame nationalist sentiment and pressure Filipino leaders to respond forcefully. The arbitral ruling of 2016 is the Philippines’ legal anchor, but China’s refusal to recognize it means compliance is difficult. The task is not to force acceptance but to manage disputes in ways that prevent escalation.
