A Japanese naval vessel completed a three-day goodwill visit to Davao City last week, underscoring expanding maritime cooperation and defense ties between Japan and the Philippines amid shared efforts to promote regional security.

The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer JS Ikazuchi docked at the Port of Davao from May 30 to June 1 as part of ongoing exchanges between the two countries’ naval forces.

During the visit, officers and crew of the vessel paid a courtesy call on Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao Commander Commodore Ireneo D. Battung, reflecting continued collaboration between the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the Philippine Navy in support of maritime security and regional stability.

Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte also visited the destroyer on May 30 and toured the vessel, welcoming its officers and crew on behalf of the city.

The port call included community engagement activities, with approximately 50 Japanese residents living in Davao invited aboard the ship for a special tour. The event aimed to strengthen ties among members of the local Japanese community and promote people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

The visit concluded with a goodwill exercise conducted off the coast of Davao on June 1. JS Ikazuchi participated alongside the Philippine Navy’s BRP Artemio Ricarte (PS-37) in maritime drills that officials said demonstrated the strong cooperation and mutual trust between the two nations.

Japan and the Philippines have deepened defense and security relations in recent years through increased military exchanges, joint exercises and maritime cooperation initiatives. Both countries have emphasized the importance of maintaining stability and supporting a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

Officials said the latest port visit reflects the continuing commitment of Japan and the Philippines to strengthen bilateral maritime cooperation and foster closer relations between their peoples.
