ROVELYN Baterbonia, mother of Rene Clert Baterbonia — one of two members (the other is Divine Adili) of the Ateneo de Manila University Men’s Basketball Team who died June 8 in a drowning incident during a team-building activity in Aurora province — was quoted on a Facebook post expressing her frustration over the mishap.

The Manila Times is reprinting her post, originally in Cebuano and translated to English:

“I only have one question: WHY? If you had included us in the discussions and informed us that there was such a training program, even if we are poor, I would never have allowed my son to join it. All of his hard work and sacrifices were nothing to laugh at, and now it will end up like this? “Until now, we still have not received a clear and proper answer about why this happened. I hope you will answer all our questions, give us the truth and explanation that we have been waiting for.

“I have not seen my son’s body. They have not given me any photos or videos — if it is true that he is really gone, I still do not know where he is.

“It is very difficult when you are poor because you cannot just go anywhere to look for answers. Who should I turn to? Where should I go to get clear answers to know what really happened to my son?”
