DELEGATES from the European Union were impressed by Ilagan City’s initiative to make the Corn Capital of the Philippines the most livable city and foster a partnership in line with its effort in advancing its green economy and circular economy initiatives.
In his visit to Ilagan City, Massimo Santoro, the ambassador of the European Union to the Philippines, expressed support for the initiatives the local government unit (LGU) had undertaken.
This came on the heels of Ilagan City’s latest recognition when it was chosen as one of the 20 pioneering cities in the country in pushing through with the circular economy under the European Union-Philippine green partnership powered by EU’s Global Gateway initiatives.
Joining Ambassador Santoro in paying the LGU officials a visit were EU representatives Tsevotomir Svilenov and Ada-Stina Pesamaa.
Also present in the event were United Nations Development Program Philippines (UNDP) representatives Voltaire Acosta, Elaine Saniel and Ricardo Alindayu.
Also part of the initiative is the Department of the Interior and Local Government, and the implementing UNDP Philippines, the specific objective 2 (SO2) goal here is to empower LGUs and communities to lead inclusive circular economy transitions — among them reducing plastics and economic waste, creating green jobs and building climate resilient local systems rooted in sustainability.
“We shared the same initiatives with your Mayor, Jay Diaz and I would like to congratulate him for that,” said Santoro during his speech while receiving the warm welcome from the LGU officials at the Ilagan City Hall.
Diaz reaffirmed claims that agriculture remains the primary livelihood of local folks, driven by the resilience and dedication of their farmers.
This circular economy, according to Mayor Diaz, underscores the city’s vision of creating more job opportunities, increasing investments and maximizing the value of local resources for the benefit of Ilagan residents.
“This significant gathering reflects the City of Ilagan’s commitment to innovation, sustainability and inclusive growth through strong local and international partnerships,” said Diaz.
