BAGUIO CITY — Mayor Benjamin Magalong has called on Baguio City residents to help address the persistent problem of clogged drainage and sewer systems following complaints about overflowing sewer and drainage systems in various parts of the Summer Capital.
Magalong said the issue is largely caused by improper waste disposal and a lack of discipline among some members of the public.
“There are many cases like that. One of the main reasons is that people continue to throw garbage into drainage systems. Some even dispose of oil and cooking grease into the drains,” the mayor said.
He said that maintaining the city’s drainage infrastructure requires cooperation between the local government and the community.
He urged residents to report violations and problem areas instead of remaining silent.
“I am appealing to our residents to report to us if you see these things happening. Don’t just stay quiet. We need everyone’s help,” he said.
“The local government cannot know everything that’s happening on the ground.”
The mayor said inspections of clogged sewer lines frequently reveal large amounts of waste materials, including used cooking oil, garbage, diapers and sanitary napkins.
“When these sewer lines become blocked, that’s what we find inside — oil, cooking grease, trash, diapers, napkins,” he added.
Magalong stressed the importance of responsible waste disposal, reminding residents that poor practices not only damage public infrastructure but also contribute to flooding and sanitation problems throughout the city.
He called on the public to exercise greater discipline and civic responsibility to help keep Baguio’s drainage systems clear and functional.
