BAGUIO CITY — Mayor Benjamin Magalong said the rehabilitation of Burnham Lake is now approximately 80-percent complete, adding that he will conduct another inspection to assess the latest developments and ensure that the project remains on track.

Magalong also said preparations are already underway for the second phase of the Burnham Park rehabilitation project, which will include improvements to the rose garden, children’s park, skating rink, and other surrounding areas.

The City Environment and Parks Management Office, headed by Rhenan Diwas, recently met with the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (Tieza) to discuss plans and timelines for the next stage of the development.

The mayor said the bidding process for the second phase may begin soon, even before the lake rehabilitation is fully completed, provided that the agreed 80-percent accomplishment milestone has been reached. He expressed optimism that the entire rehabilitation project will be completed by next year.

Once Burnham Lake reopens to the public, Magalong said that all boats operating on the lake must be brand-new and properly maintained as the city government will establish and enforce operational standards to ensure the safety and quality of services for both residents and tourists.

The rehabilitation was initiated to address concerns over water quality, ecological degradation and aging facilities surrounding the lake. It aimed to restore the lake’s ecological balance, improve water quality, enhance visitor experience, and ensure its sustainable management.

The rehabilitation forms part of the broader Burnham Park Master Development Plan implemented by the local government and Tieza  that seeks to preserve the lake’s historical significance while modernizing facilities to better serve future generations of residents and visitors.

Burnham Lake is one of Baguio’s most iconic attractions which traces its origins to the early development of Burnham Park that was formally established in 1925.

It was incorporated into the park’s design by renowned American architect and urban planner Daniel Burnham, whose master plan for the Summer Capital envisioned a city centered on open spaces and recreational areas.

For generations, Burnham Lake has been a favorite destination for boating, leisure activities and family outings for residents and tourists.
