BLACKWATER is keeping Filipino-American guard Sedrick Barefield amid reports that the second overall pick of the 2024 PBA Draft is on the trading block.
The 29-year-old Barefield’s contract is set to expire on July 15, 2026 but Bossing team manager Johnson Martinez said they are extending the shifty combo guard’s contract, at least until the end of the PBA Season 50.
However, offering him a fresh contract extension that goes beyond Season 50 remains a question mark, Martinez said.
Martinez added that the team intends to evaluate how Barefield will perform for the season-ending Governors’ Cup that starts on July 10.
“We want to see how he plays this conference,” Martinez said.
Blackwater team owner Dioceldo Sy confirmed Martinez’s statement, saying things remain at status quo with the former Southern Methodist and Utah standout.
“Yes, (Barefield) stays until the end of the conference,” said Sy.
Barefield averaged 21.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists in the Commissioner’s Cup, where the team finished with a 2-10 card.
The Bossing also changed coaches with Jeff Cariaso stepping down and handing the reins to former Gilas Pilipinas women’s head coach Pat Aquino. RICHARD DY
