SEN. Mark Villar has called for strong security measures in and around schools, and renewed his push for expanded youth intervention programs following the fatal stabbing of a Grade 8 student from Las Piñas National High School.
“I strongly condemn the brutal assault and stabbing of a Grade 8 student at Las Piñas National High School. No young Las Piñero should live in fear or danger while attending or returning to school,” Villar said.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns over student safety and youth violence, prompting calls for stronger coordination among local government units, schools, law enforcement agencies and communities.
Villar urged the Las Piñas City government, school administrators, the Philippine National Police, barangay (village) officials and parents to work together in implementing more proactive security measures to protect students within and around school premises.
He also expressed concern over reports that the suspects involved in the attack are minors, most of whom are allegedly out-of-school youth, adding that the tragedy highlights the urgent need to strengthen programs that provide education, guidance and opportunities for vulnerable young people before they become involved in criminal activities.
“It is very unfortunate that the suspects are all minors, and most of them are out-of-school youth. Instead of being involved in crime, our youth should be in school or allowed to return to school and have a proper direction in life,” he said.
The senator stressed that addressing youth violence requires not only enhanced security but also long-term investments in education, mental health and intervention initiatives that help keep young people engaged and supported.
“This is a reminder that we need to expand education, youth intervention and mental health programs to provide them with the right guidance, support and opportunities to avoid the path of violence,” Villar added.
He said the incident should serve as a wake-up call for government agencies, educational institutions and communities to strengthen efforts aimed at safeguarding students while addressing the root causes of juvenile delinquency.
“May this incident serve as a call to action for a stronger collective responsibility to ensure the safety of every student. Our schools must remain places of wisdom and the formation of good character and hope — not of violence and fear,” Villar said.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stabbing, while school officials and local authorities are expected to review and strengthen campus security protocols in the wake of the incident.
