KABABAIHAN Partylist reinforced its commitment to justice, health and women's welfare by supporting "Run for a Cause: Hakbang ng Bayanihan, Kalusugan sa Piitan," a fundraising fun run held on June 28 that drew 745 participants in support of the medical and welfare needs of women Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) at the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City.
As one of the event sponsors, Kababaihan Partylist joined the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor), led by Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr., the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) under C/SSUPT Daisy Sevilla-Castillote, and Greenfield District in advancing an initiative that reflects the party-list's advocacies on justice, health, livelihood, and women empowerment.
Department of Justice Undersecretary Margarita Gutierrez, a supporter of Kababaihan Partylist, said the activity highlights the importance of ensuring that women deprived of liberty continue to receive the healthcare and dignity they deserve.
“Women deprived of liberty are often overlooked, yet they remain entitled to dignity, compassion, and access to medical care. Through this run, we are sending a simple message: they have not been forgotten, and their welfare matters,” Gutierrez said.
She added that supporting initiatives such as the charity run reflects Kababaihan Partylist's broader commitment to expanding access to essential services for Filipino women.
“What makes this initiative special is that everyone benefits. Participants are encouraged to take care of their own health through physical activity while helping provide medical support to women at CIW. It's a simple but meaningful way to turn every kilometer into an act of compassion,” she added.
The charity run brought together participants from the BuCor National Headquarters, New Bilibid Prison, Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), Philippine Army (PA), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), private organizations, running communities, and the general public, underscoring broad support for the institution's health and welfare initiatives.
Hosted by television personality Karen Bordador, the event also drew the support of vlogger and professional make-up artist Hajie Alejandro.
Families joined the activity with their children and pets, while one participant completed the race on crutches, drawing admiration from fellow runners for exemplifying determination and resilience.
Participants kicked off the morning with a Zumba warm-up before taking on the three-kilometer and five-kilometer race categories.
They later gathered for refreshments and the awarding ceremony, capping off a morning that celebrated fitness, compassion, and community service.
For her part, Castillote thanked Kababaihan Partylist, the sponsors, volunteers, partner agencies and participants for supporting the institution's efforts to improve the welfare of women PDLs.
“We are deeply grateful to everyone who joined and supported this meaningful initiative. Beyond raising funds, this event strengthens our commitment to promoting health and wellness and advancing programs that improve the lives of the women PDLs entrusted to our care. Every participant became part of that mission,” Castillote said.
Organizers said proceeds from the charity run will help fund the medical, laboratory, hospitalization, and other welfare-related needs of women PDLs, while supporting future health and wellness programs at CIW.
Kababaihan Partylist said it remains committed to supporting programs that uplift Filipino women, particularly those in vulnerable situations, adding that it will continue partnering with government agencies and community organizations in initiatives that promote health, justice, and opportunities for women – both inside and outside correctional facilities.
