MANILA, Philippines — Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian on Monday assured Senate officials and employees that his leadership would be anchored on protecting the integrity of the institution, saying the chamber would continue to uphold its constitutional mandate despite the political challenges it faces.
Speaking during the Senate's flag-raising ceremony on Monday, Gatchalian emphasized that his administration would strengthen—not undermine—the institution as he called on employees to remain committed to public service.
"I thank all of you because, despite what our institution is going through, you have continued to provide quality service to our fellow Filipinos. I ask you to trust me that we will not do anything that will damage the institution we all cherish," Gatchalian said in a mix of English and Filipino.
The Senate President said his leadership would be guided by four core principles: integrity, professionalism, dedication, and leadership by example.
"I hope that, in the years we will work together, we will keep these four principles in our hearts and minds so that we can demonstrate that the Senate of the Philippines is ready to provide the most effective service to our beloved country," he added.
Gatchalian also expressed gratitude to Senate personnel for ensuring the orderly preparations for the opening of the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, which was scheduled to begin later Monday.
His remarks came at a critical time for the Senate as it takes on one of its most significant constitutional responsibilities by convening as an impeachment court to hear the case against the Vice President. Under the 1987 Constitution, the Senate has the sole authority to try and decide impeachment cases after the House of Representatives transmits approved articles of impeachment.
