MANILA, Philippines – A magnitude 5.8 earthquake took place in the municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental on Monday afternoon, according to the state seismology bureau.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said it was only an aftershock of the magnitude 7.8 offshore Sarangani (Region XII/SOCCSKSRAGEN) and magnitude 6.5 offshore Davao Occidental earthquake that both occurred in June.

However, Intensity 4 was felt by Sarangani residents following the latest event, which happened around 4:11 p.m. some 63 kilometers southeast of Balut Island, also in the same town.

With a depth of nine kilometers, Phivolcs said it was tectonic in origin.

It said that Instrumental Intensity 2 was recorded over the towns of Kiamba and Malungon, Sarangani province; General Santos City; Tupi, South Cotabato while Intensity 1 over Santa Maria, Davao Occidental; Malapatan, Maasim, and Maitum, Sarangani; City of Koronadal, Cotabato; Surallah, and T'Boli, South Cotabato; and Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat.

Phivolcs said both damage to property and aftershocks would be unlikely from the Balut Island quake.
