FILIPINA tennis sensation Alex Eala may have bowed out of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships, but her historic campaign proved that Filipino athletes can compete—and thrive—on the global stage with unwavering support.

Eala, the first Filipina to reach the second week of Wimbledon, saw her impressive run end after a hard-fought 4-6, 6-4, 3-6 loss to Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the Round of 16 at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in London.

Back home, the Philippine Sports Commission organized a public watch party at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City, where more than a hundred fans gathered to cheer for the 21-year-old.

Waving Philippine flags, supporters rallied behind Eala throughout the match, celebrating a campaign that elevated Philippine tennis to unprecedented heights despite the defeat.

As she left Centre Court, Eala received a standing ovation from the crowd in recognition of her remarkable breakthrough performance.

The Rafa Nadal Academy, where Eala has trained since she was 13 years old, also paid tribute to its standout graduate.

“So proud of you, Alexandra Eala! Keep shining. The best is yet to come! VAMOS!” the academy posted on Tuesday.

One of the defining moments of Eala’s Wimbledon journey came in the third round, where she stunned defending champion and World No. 3 Iga Swiatek, 7-6 (9), 6-2, in what is widely regarded as one of the greatest victories in Philippine tennis history.

The upset even caught the attention of tennis icon Billie Jean King, while Eala herself dedicated the victory to her younger self—the aspiring tennis player who once competed in local courts across the Philippines and played in Milo tennis tournaments.

After moving to Spain to join the Rafa Nadal Academy at just 13 years old, Eala steadily developed into one of the sport’s brightest young stars.

Her breakthrough 2026 season also included partnering with tennis legend Venus Williams at the Bad Homburg Open, capturing the WTA 125 Birmingham Open title, and climbing to a career-high world ranking of No. 28.

Despite her growing list of achievements, Eala has remained grounded, saying every milestone belongs not only to her but to every Filipino who has supported her journey.

“We’re very proud of where we come from,” Eala said.

“We have a very strong sense of community. You can see it when someone does well. We’re a community that uplifts each other. We’re quite positive people, and when positive things happen to other Filipinos around the world, I think we just kind of share the enjoyment and share the happiness.”
