The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte resumed today with the cross-examination of NBI agent John Mark Calilung. Testifying for the prosecution, Calilung authenticated the video of the press conference of Vice President Duterte last November 2024. The video is part of the evidence to support the allegation that Duterte made grave threats against the country’s top officials. Prosecution spokesman Jay Tolosa said they are expecting the defense to test the credibility of Calilung during the cross-examination.
More Northern Luzon areas are placed under Storm Signal Number One due to Super Typhoon “Inday.” These are Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Apayao, Kalinga, Isabela, the northern portion of Aurora, the northern and central portions of Catanduanes, the northeastern portion of Quirino, the eastern portion of Ifugao, Ilocos Norte, the eastern portion of Mountain Province, and the northern portion of Abra. According to PAGASA, “Inday” will remain a super typhoon until tomorrow. It will be downgraded into a typhoon by tomorrow evening. “Inday” is forecast to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility this Saturday.

The Department of Health is under a “Code White Alert” after Super Typhoon “Inday” entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility. “Code White Alert” means the agency’s operations center will be active 24/7. This is to ensure a rapid response to affected communities. The Health Department is coordinating with the NDRRMC, LGUs, and regional disaster units.

The Philippines and the United States have expressed concern over China’s launch of an unarmed ballistic missile. The missile was launched from a submarine into the Pacific Ocean two days ago. The Department of Foreign Affairs, or DFA, says Philippine authorities were notified of the launch. However, the DFA underscored the importance of maintaining a calm and stable environment in the Indo-Pacific region. U.S. Ambassador to Manila Lee Lipton says the launch was provocative. He says it is further evidence of China’s rapid and secretive nuclear weapons development program.
The number of unemployed Filipinos slightly increased in May. That’s according to the Philippine Statistics Authority. Unemployment rose to 4.8 percent. That’s higher than the 4.7 percent in April. It is also higher than the 3.9 percent recorded a year earlier.
