Advocacy group urges SC action on BARMM elections to protect peace

AN advocacy group has called on the Supreme Court to resolve pending petitions regarding the first regular elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) before the September 2026 polls, warning that delays could threaten the peace process.

Amana-BARMM, through convenors Alim Saad Amate and Maulana Mamutuk, said the Court must act with urgency amid growing political tensions nationwide, including ongoing impeachment proceedings and public demonstrations.

The group said recent rallies in Cotabato City and Lanao del Sur, alongside the EDSA rally in Manila, reflect a unified public demand for institutions to listen to the people.

"We traveled far to be heard because the Bangsamoro people cannot be treated as an afterthought,” said Mamutuk.

“The Supreme Court is now the last constitutional forum that can prevent confusion before election day," added Mamutuk.

Amate, on the other hand, emphasized that the BARMM elections transcend ordinary political concerns, describing them as a "constitutional peace issue" rooted in decades of struggle, peace negotiations, and the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB).

"The BARMM is not only an election issue. It is a constitutional peace issue,” said Amate.

“It came from struggle, sacrifice, peace talks, and the CAB. These gains must be protected," stressed Amate.

The group urged the high court to carefully review all petitions and appeals filed before it, particularly amid concerns over political instability, questions of representation, and issues surrounding the Moro Islamic Liberation Front's leadership in the transition process under the Bangsamoro Organic Law.

Amana-BARMM called on the Supreme Court to ensure the historic September 2026 elections are lawful, orderly, credible and free from chaos.
