PCG places Eastern Visayas in full typhoon alert status

TACLOBAN CITY — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Eastern Visayas has been placed on full alert status for Super Typhoon Inday which is excepted to enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning.

Lt. Commander Manuelito Palacio, chief of the PCG in Eastern Leyte, told The Manila Times that Eastern Visayas has been placed under full alert status since Monday and rescue equipment are ready to be deployed to respond to emergencies.

Palacio said they are now coordinating with various local government units in Leyte to help them warn the public of the incoming typhoon which is expected to bring strong winds, storm surge and flooding in low-laying areas.

“Although there might be no landfall, what we anticipate are the strong winds and flooding in low-laying areas of Leyte and we have to warn them of the dangers,” the PCG official said.

“Fishermen have been also warned not to go sea or if they are already out there, they need to go back home immediately,” Palacio added.

A no sailing status will be ordered in some areas of Eastern Visayas once gale warnings and typhoon signals are raised by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, he said.
