Out of paralysis, a palette rises

Before pursuing her passion for art, Luneta Groot gained valuable experience working as a customs arrival worker at Manila International Airport (MIA). During her tenure, she was responsible for inspecting and processing incoming travelers and their belongings, ensuring compliance with customs regulations. This position not only honed her attention to detail but also exposed her to a diverse array of cultures and backgrounds. Her journey from this role to becoming an artist demonstrates resilience and versatility, inspiring admiration in the audience.

On July 2, 1990, she married and subsequently relocated to the Netherlands. In this new chapter of her life, she was fortunate to have two daughters who brought immense joy and purpose to her days. Passionate about art, she pursued private painting lessons within her close-knit community, gradually honing her skills and developing her unique creative style.

Managing the demands of motherhood alongside her artistic ambitions proved quite challenging. The daily balancing act of nurturing her children while dedicating time to her art often felt overwhelming. However, her determination and resilience shone through; she refused to give up on her dreams. With each passing day, she found ways to keep moving forward, striving to create beautiful works of art while embracing the joys and trials of family life.

She pursued fashion design in Amsterdam, immersing herself in the creative process by producing a wide array of drawings and sketches that showcased her innovative clothing designs. Previously, in her home environment, she dedicated her time to honing her sewing and stitching skills, exploring various techniques to create distinctive clothing styles.

In tandem with her creative endeavors, she recognized the importance of communication in her professional life. To enhance her ability to connect with others, she enrolled in evening Dutch classes. This decision was motivated by her desire to interact more effectively with her colleagues at work and to deepen her understanding of the community’s cultural nuances.

Because of her demanding workload, she can only indulge her passion for painting during the quiet hours of the night. Throughout the day, she immerses herself in her work, tirelessly supporting her husband and addressing the various needs of their expanding family.

Juggling responsibilities leaves little room for her to pursue the creative outlet she treasures most. Yet, despite the infrequent opportunities to wield her brush, the fire of her passion for painting continues to burn brightly and unwaveringly in her heart, inspiring her to find ways to make art a part of her life.

Then, between the years 2000 and 2012, her life took a significant turn after she was diagnosed with cholesteatoma in her right arm, which emerged after her third surgical procedure. This diagnosis led to complications with the brachial plexus, resulting in nerve damage that caused her right arm to become paralyzed. Over the course of her medical journey, she underwent a total of five surgeries, each one taking a toll on her physically and emotionally.

The cumulative effects of these surgeries forced her to halt her professional career completely, stripping her of the ability to engage in the activities she had once loved and excelled at. As time went on, she found herself living with an overwhelming and unrelenting pain that affected her daily life. In moments of solitude at home, she often faced the weight of her struggles and the loneliness that accompanied them.

Despite these challenges, she found solace and strength in her faith, placing her unwavering trust and hope in the almighty God. This spiritual guidance helped her navigate the often difficult days and find resilience in the face of adversity.

In an effort to combat her boredom, she turned to her husband and asked for a variety of art supplies, including vibrant paints, a set of high-quality brushes, and palette knives of different shapes and sizes. Reigniting her passion for art, she decided to paint again with her left hand, a fortunate choice since she is naturally left-handed.

With each brushstroke, she dedicated her heart and soul to the paintings she created, channeling her energy and the pain she had experienced into every piece. The colors she selected were not just random; they symbolized her emotions — rays of love, hope, and healing that illuminated her spirit. Groot immersed herself in this creative process, feeling an overwhelming joy as she expressed herself through art.

She often reflected on how blessed she was, thanking God for the renewed opportunity to live fully and engage in the activity that brought her the most pleasure. Her commitment to painting remained steadfast, driven by a belief in a living God who supports her through life’s challenges.

Groot has actively participated in several art groups throughout Europe, showcasing her talent and creativity. In 2018, she was honored to receive the prestigious Diamond Carpathian International Art Exhibition Certificate, awarded by Maestro Ludvik Lgnatyevicg, in recognition of her contributions to the art community.

In the Philippines, Groot’s artwork gained prominence through her participation in the exhibition titled “Giving Hope Through Colors.” The event was organized by the Strategic Alliance for Networking on Disability in collaboration with Sinacaban Eco Farm and Gats Resto Bar, both located in Ozamis City. The exhibition ran from February 29 to March 28, 2020, and aimed to raise awareness and funds for the medical and educational needs of children with disabilities in Misamis Occidental. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of her artwork directly supported this noble cause. Through her work, she continues to inspire hope and promote inclusivity for children with disabilities.

Rather than setting concrete plans for her future career, Groot chooses to place her trust in God’s divine plan, embracing uncertainty and focusing on the present. She remains open to whatever opportunities may come her way, believing that everything happens in its own time.
